"It was a dark and stormy night..."

Fortunately, Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code is a much better read than that.

Louvre Museum, Paris
10:46 p.m.

Renowned curator Jacques Saunière staggered through the vaulted archway of the museum's Grand Gallery. He lunged for the nearest painting he could see, a Caravaggio. Grabbing the gilded frame, the seventy-six-year-old man heaved the masterpiece toward himself until it tore from the wall and Saunière collapsed backward in a heap beneath the canvas.

Thus begins the acclaimed best-selling novel and soon-to-be releases movie. It has been an amazing cultural touchstone for millions, sparking renewed interest in art, literature, scripture, the church (and some of its darker and lesser known aspects), and ultimately, in Jesus himself.

There are many in various religious communities who are quite annoyed with the whole Da Vinci Code phenomena, fearing that it will shake the foundations of the faith. They charge that the novel embellishes fact, distorts issues of faith, makes use of spurious ancient documents, and over-reaches on several important issues. Sounds like an interesting read!

So, knowing that so many have read the book and will see the movie, I, like many other pastors, would like to offer a discussion class on it. Beginning Wednesday, May 3rd, we will present a series of four sessions on The Da Vinci Code, making use of written and video materials that will help us "separate fact from fiction." Read or re-read the book (provide your own copy, which is now available in an illustrated version which I find helpful). We'd love to have you join us for the classes, held Wednesdays at 10 am and 6 pm. beginning May 3rd.

Summer Service Schedule

Beginning May 28th, the Sunday on Memorial Day weekend, we will go to our summer worship schedule, which has one service at 9 am, followed by our Sunday school hour. On this first day of the summer schedule, the Congregational Life Board is planning a special "Potluck Family Reunion Brunch." Stay tuned for more details.

Blessings and Peace,

Pastor Larry
