A Message from Pastor Becker...
"Do Not Be Afraid;
from Now on You Will Be Catching People"

With these words (in Luke 5:10) Jesus ended our gospel lesson from last Sunday, giving his disciples and us a challenge and an invitation to a new vocation, a new job: bringing people to Jesus.

I've always appreciated the way in which Jesus related this new vocation to their current skills and employment. They UNDERSTOOD fishing (though they weren't apparently good at it that day!), and they saw Jesus' presence and help in their work. God was able to use the skills they learned in life in the work he called them to in the Kingdom. That's a powerful and important concept for us today!

What skills, talents and experience do you have? With only one notable exception (don't ask! You don't want to know!!!), I've seen people able to use their life/work skills in service to God. God doesn't always call us out of our jobs, but he sure makes use of the talents and gifts that we have in his service. What is it that you're really good at? Start to ask God how he can use you - you'll be surprised at what God leads you to do. Sometimes the skills (and we!) need a little tweaking and refining, but still - God can use us all.

Notice also that Jesus told his disciples not to be afraid. Why would he need to do that? I think they became aware of Jesus' power and significance, as well as their lack of the same. All their skills and abilities amounted to exactly nothing - and they knew it. It is the same with us. We may spend our lives going after things that we think are important, but in comparison to the work that Jesus calls us to, it really doesn't amount to much. But participating in Jesus' work, allowing him to bless our efforts and use us to heal, restore, preach to, teach, feed, clothe and care for those whom he cares for (pretty much EVERYONE!), our talents and abilities are amplified and focused.

It is amazing to watch, but even more amazing to experience it! Hear God's call to give yourself - all that you have and are - to him, and as he blesses your work, you will find peace and joy in all you do. AND others will come to know him as you do.

Lent Is Coming!
Ash Wednesday is soon upon us. Join us on February 17th, 7 pm, for our Ash Wednesday service, featuring the traditional imposition of ashes. That evening we will introduce our theme for the Lenten season:  The Sign of Jonah. On Ash Wednesday we will consider our call, even as Jonah considered - and ran from - his call. DON'T RUN FROM YOURS!!!

Blessing and peace!
Pastor Becker
Mark Your Calendars...
Join us for our Lenten Journey entitled,
"The Sign of Jonah" written by Rev. Dr. Reed Lessing.

Jonah ... for Lent?
Sounds fishy, but it's a natural fit.
When the Jews asked Jesus for a sign, he said, "I will give you only the sign of Jonah." After three days in the belly of the earth, Jesus rose with news of God's prodigal grace. This series of special services for Lent explores the meaning of "The Sign of Jonah" as we follow Jonah on his journey ...
and Jesus on his way to the cross.

School News & Events...
Help for Haiti
The devastation caused by the recent earthquake in Haiti has been tremendous.  People who must flee their homes quickly often do not have time to pack essential items. Health kits can help refugees maintain personal hygiene while living in exile. Items may also contribute to a new start for those who can return home.
Our school would like to help the relief effort by donating health kits to be distributed to the people of Haiti through Lutheran World Relief.
Contact the school for more information on the kits and what needs to be included.
